Mitchell along with her mother, and their two children relocated from New York in Dallas Texas where Mitchell's mother was married in 1975. Mitchell attended Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts, a public magnet high school. Mitchell is one of three siblings, including Kristina Kristie Mitchell. Katherine Day Kate Mitchell was born that same year. Mitchell received the degree of bachelor of fine arts in acting at Stephens College in 1991. She was also a student at the British American Drama Academy. Mitchell worked for six years at the Dallas Theater Center, and one year at Encore Theater. In June of 2010, it was said that her role in Criminal Minds would be reduced for the sixth season. Brewsters' character left the series on March 2011and could come back to the show when she is older.
