Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandmother and godparents. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that it was not the right place for her. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third try. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her fellow students. Ford's first appearance on television was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. But Tate soon began to garner notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her show in 1996.
